The Root of Service as Action
One thing which frame a dynamic educational experience in IB is ACTION. Action in IB defined as learning by doing and experiencing. IB Programme value the action which is principled. Principled means act with integrity and honesty, with a strong sense of fairness, justice, and respect for the dignity of the individual, groups, and communities. Action which takes responsibility for their own actions and the consequences that accompany them.
Principled action is very important and lays in the second ring of MYP model along with SERVICE. Principled action is a strategy and outcome. As strategy and as an outcome, principled action represent IB commitment in teaching and learning through practical and real world experience. Action will involve learning while the learner is doing it and also enhancing learning about the learner her/himself and others. Action is also can be understood as making responsible choice including decision not to act.
Principled Action may involve SERVICE LEARNING, ADVOCACY, AND EDUCATING ONESELF AND OTHERS. Service learning is a structured approach to integrate service into learning. Service is define as a subset or part of particular action. Advocacy is defined as any action that speaks in favor of, recommends, argues for a cause, supports or defends, or pleads on behalf of others. Education oneself and others can be defined as giving intellectual, moral, and or skills to the learner whether its for moral, and or skills to the learner whether its for oneself or for others.
Action and service have always been shared value of the IB community and students take action when they apply what they are learning.
